AED in the Workplace

An Automated External Defibrillator AED is a device used to treat victims of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). SCA occurs when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating, interrupting blood flow and oxygen to the heart and brain.

First Aid – Cold Weather Hazards

Hazard: Each winter VSC responds to customer’s frozen fire protection systems that require immediate repair. As a result, employees often come in contact with extremely cold water and cold air temperatures.

Hazards: Winter Weather creates conditions that can expose all VSC employees to illness and injury! Exposure to hazards include: Walking on ice & snow covered surfaces, contact with frozen pipes or extremely cold water, and exposure to cold air temperatures! These risks are encountered in service, installation, inspections and on construction sites!

Housekeeping – Storage of Oxygen and Acetylen cylinders

Hazard: There is a reoccurrence of Oxygen and Acetylene cylinders not stored properly in our warehouse facilities. This
is a fire and explosion hazard.

Impalement Hazard

HAZARD The vertical rebar protruding from this concrete formwork is an impalement hazard. This hazard can result in very
serious injury. VSCF&S workers had been exposed to the rebar and numerous trip hazards during installation of the
Flexible expansion loop. VSCF&S technicians notified the GC that there were no implement caps on the rebar, but no
corrective action had been taken.

Ladder Safety – Inspect Ladders

Hazard: Failure to inspect, maintain and replace ladders can result in injury and property damage! VSC employees have suffered serious injury from falls due to ladder collapse. Tools & material sitting atop ladders fall off, striking and injuring employees below. When a ladder falls, employees come in contact with other employees, utilities, walls causing property ceiling fixtures, or fall into walls and equipment causing other damage.

Lock Out Tag Out – Working Around Motorized Equipment

Hazard: A VSC employee recently suffered life threatening injuries while installing a new sprinkler system beneath a conveyor. His arm became pinched and rolled into a large conveyor belt causing major trauma.

Federal and State OSHA agencies are more frequently conducting compliance inspections in the construction industry. Compliance officers are conducting site investigations on projects where VSC employees are present or were previously exposed to a hazard.
