Working Overhead – Laceration/Puncture Injuries

HAZARD:

Over the past few years several VSC employees have suffered injuries to upper extremities as a result of working in Ceiling and Wall cavities.

When Installing, Removing, Servicing or Inspecting sprinkler and alarm systems employees have come in contact with sharp edges of support brackets, duct work, ceiling panel wires, all thread rods and other objects & structures.

PREVENTATIVE MEASURES:

Before you start to work in these spaces conduct a visual inspection of the work area and correct the hazard. If the hazard cannot be eliminated, and the task requires you to come in close contact with the object, try the following options as a preventative measure:

  • Reposition the ladder or use a mechanical lift to gain better access around the hazard.
  • Ask for help from a co-worker so that you both can avoid the hazard.
  • Set up temporary lighting or remove more ceiling panels to provide adequate lighting into the space.
  • Wrap a tarp, duct tape or place a board over the hazardous object.
  • Wear a Kevlar arm sleeve as shown in the photo to the right.
  • Wear Work Gloves!
  • Always wear a Hard Hat and Safety Glasses to prevent injury to the eyes and head!
