Water Damage Prevention – Working Near Electrical Equipment

Hazard:

The fire main valve seen here leaked onto the electrical panel below causing damage to components and
shutting down air conditioning system for an entire building. Damaged occurred during a five year test of the fire suppression system that was being completed by a VSC F&S Inspection crew.

Corrective Action:

Never conduct tests or services on a fire protection system when valves, gauges or other
mechanical devices are near an electrical panel or equipment. Leaks or rupture of fire main can also create shock hazards from water accumulating on the floor near electrical panels or equipment.

Pre-test inspections:

To prevent water damage or electrical shock, immediately notify your Manager or Supervisor and explain the
exposure. VSC F&S will communicate the hazard to the customer and conduct a review of preventative methods specific to each situation. No test will proceed until customer and VSC F&S have documented and agreed to corrective actions.
