Vehicle Housekeeping – Inspect for Unsafe Conditions

HAZARD:

Unsafe conditions of VSC vehicles can lead to serious accidents, fines and lawsuits. While driver behavior remains the primary cause of accidents, the condition of VSC vehicles can lead to moving violations and injury or damage claims against the driver.

PREVENTATIVE MEASURES:

Conduct Vehicle Inspections to Eliminate Problems and Ensure the Safe Operation of Vehicles You Drive.

  • Document daily vehicle safety checks.
  • Service improperly working brakes.
  • Secure or remove unsecured materials, equipment or items that will become projectiles during crash, or may fall onto roadway causing property damage & injury.
  • Remove trash & debris in cab, bed and storage area.
  • Remove overstocked and excessive materials left from previous jobs.
  • Replace missing, damaged, or obstructed mirrors.
  • Clean mirrors and windows often.
  • Replace cracked windshield obstructing drivers’ view.
  • Repair/replace broken or nonfunctioning turn signals and headlights.
  • Do not drive vehicle when a hazardous condition exists or it violates local traffic laws.
  • Carry a charged & inspected fire extinguisher.
  • Confirm operator’s manual is in the vehicle.
  • Service malfunctioning defroster causing obstructed view during damp or winter weather conditions.
  • Do not modify or alter vehicle safety features.
  • Replace all missing or damaged safety items.
  • Inspect overall vehicle mechanical condition.
  • Fill low oil and coolant levels.
  • Repair/replace damaged seat belt & air bag systems.
  • Service vehicle when scheduled or indicator light present.
  • Do not improperly store flammable chemicals.
  • Replace missing or damaged straps and hold down devices to secure ladders, pipe & other items carried in bed of truck.
  • Replace or update missing or expired plates and registration & insurance cards.
  • Immediately report all damages to VSC manager.
