Ladder Safety – Trestle Ladder Warning

HAZARD

Trestle ladders can be hazardous when modified or used for purposes for which they were not designed.
Climbing the vertical extension “fly” section of the ladder can result in falls and tipping the ladder over.
Removing the vertical extension to use as a single ladder is also prohibited. A VSC employee suffered injuries totaling $8,500 in medical cost from a fall while attempting to climb the vertical section of a trestle ladder.

In an effort to avoid losing your balance and falling off the Trestle Ladder, the user must not step or stand higher than the step indicated on the label marking the highest standing level as seen here:

OSHA may use the following standard to cite VSC because of injury or trestle ladder safety violation: 1926.1053(b)(4) Ladders shall be used only for the purpose for which they were designed.
