Heat exposure can cause very serious illnesses. It can also kill you! Employees who work outdoors in the heat of summer, inside hot customer facilities, or in unventilated areas such as attic spaces where temperatures can be extreme need to take proactive actions to prevent heat-related illness.

Preventing Heat-Related Illnesses
- Condition yourself for working in hot environments. Allow your body to adjust over a few days.
- Drink water early and often. Ensure plenty of water is available to remain hydrated.
- Plan your work to include rest breaks.
- If you develop a headache, feel irritable, or you start feeling overheated, rest in a cooler location.
- When working outdoors in the sun: wear shaded eye protection, head protection, apply sunscreen frequently and take breaks in shaded areas to cool off.
