Personal Protective Equipment(PPE) – Non-Approved Hard Hats

Hazard:

VSC F&S employees on our project sites are found wearing Hard Hats from previous employers as seen here. Often they are outdated, damaged or modified. To ensure your safety and VSC compliance with federal standards, all employees must wear ONLY company issued Hard Hats.

As specified by OSHA 1926. 100(b) Helmets for the protection of employees against impact and penetration of falling and flying objects shall meet the specifications contained in American National Standards Institute, Z89.1-1969, and Safety Requirements for Industrial Head Protection. PPE must have an ANSI test data sticker or stamp on the product. Hard hats that meet government testing guidelines are identified with the Z89 label.

Hard Hat Violations:

  • Wearing backwards
  • Wearing suspension backwards
  • Wearing unapproved head gear underneath
  • Painting the shell
  • Altering suspension of shell
  • Wearing beyond expiration date
  • Drilling holes into the shell

Preventative Measures:

Wear only VSC issued hard hats. Do not make any alterations to PPE. The manufactures expiration from the date of issue for the MSA hard hats we provide are 5 years for the shell and 1 year for the suspension. Notify your supervisor when your hard hat needs to be replaced.
