Mobile Elevated Work Platform(MEWP) – OCCUPANT Responsibilites

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) requires the employer (VSC) to ensure that Employees who operate, occupy and supervise MEWP’s are trained, qualified and authorized in the intended use, safe operation, inspection, maintenance and familiarization on different models and classifications of MEWPs. To ensure compliance with these new standards and to prevent potential accidents and OSHA citations, VSC Risk Management is publishing this notice of responsibilities for VSC MEWP Occupant.

OCCUPANT RESPONSIBILITES:

All personnel who occupy MEWP must receive basic knowledge training on the
following requirements to ensure their safety:

  • Proper use of personal fall arrest systems (PFAs) and location of anchor points in the platform for tie-off.
  • How Occupant actions can affect stability of the MEWP.
  • Safe use of MEWP accessories assigned to Occupants.
  • Site-specific work procedures Occupants must follow related to operation of MEWP.
  • At least one occupant must be trained to operate the controls in an emergency when the Operator is unable to perform, including emergency shutdown and lowering procedures.
  • Manufacturer warnings and instructions.
  • Understanding hazard preventions related to job tasks.
