Electrical Hazards – Temporary Power Source

Hazard:

There are electrical shock hazards on projects sites and in our customer’s properties that we come in direct contact with or have exposure to. One of the primary safety hazards and chances of VSC getting an OSHA citation for are temporary power sources the general contractor is providing.

The serious physical hazards of each of these violations are from direct contact with an open circuit or with a metal pipe, tool or mechanical lift equipment. Wire nuts are not insulators! They are used as connectors and can be easily knocked off with pipe or hand.

VSC is not responsible for the design, grounding or insulation of open circuits, but we are responsible for your awareness of this hazard, OSHA citations and protection against electrical shock. A portable GFCI will not prevent shock or get us out of an OSHA citation for this type of hazard.Electrical hazards are an OSHA “focus four” violation meaning there one of the top four causes of fatalities in our industry that carry up to$ 70,000 fine each!

Preventative Measures:

First and foremost Employees and Supervisor must be trained to recognize this hazard.

Before using any temporary power or working near utilities look for hazards as seen in the photos below. Do not use any power source that is a shock hazard. Document the violation and immediately contact the owner or contractor. If necessary we must provide a portable generator for our work.

Before installing pipe or working overhead check the area for exposed wires, fixtures and temporary light cords.
