Jobsite Hazards – Exposure to Other Contractor Safety Hazards

Hazard:

Exposure to safety violations created or caused by other contractors can be a hazard to VSC employees. Examples of these unsafe conditions include: missing handrails, “struck-by” heavy equipment, and electrical shock from damaged wiring or open circuit of temporary power panels. These hazards may not only cause injury, but VSC may receive an OSHA citation just because you were exposed to them. In addition to injuries caused by fall, struck-by, and electrical shock hazards, environmental exposure to gas, smoke, or vapors from chemicals in use or hot work activities can lead to employee illness.

Preventive Measures:

VSC F&S does not require our employees to correct any safety hazards caused by other trades. However, we do require you to immediately notify all VSC workers on site and your supervisor. The GC must be notified so that the hazards can be corrected. Until the hazard is corrected, VSC employees must avoid exposure or contact with the hazard. If necessary, VSC employees must stop working if the hazard is not corrected. Otherwise an injury may occur, and OSHA will cite VSC for allowing its employees to be exposed to a known hazard.

When notifying the GC of a hazard, VSC’s supervisor must document the date and contact information of the GC representative they notified. Record these hazards on the VSC site safety audit form that is completed weekly by the Field Superintendent or Foreman.
